Signs to watch for
Signs your pet's eyes need checking
Pets rarely complain about their eyes, so watch for changes in how the eyes look or how your pet behaves. See a vet promptly if you notice:
-
How the eye looks
- Cloudy, blue-grey or white areas in the eye
- Redness or a bloodshot eye
- Watery, sticky or green discharge
- A bulging eye or a change in eye size
- A third eyelid that stays across the eye
-
How your pet behaves
- Squinting or keeping an eye closed
- Pawing or rubbing at the face
- Bumping into things, or nervousness in the dark
Eye problems can get worse within hours, so don't wait to see if it clears up.
What we treat
Diagnosis and treatment for eye conditions
From a scratched eye to glaucoma, we find the cause quickly and start the right treatment to protect sight.

Ulcers & eye injuries
The clear front of the eye can be scratched by a claw, a plant or rough play. Some ulcers heal in days; deep or infected ones can threaten the eye.
Our care includes
- Fluorescein stain test to show ulcers
- Medicated drops and pain relief
- Treatment for infected or slow-healing ulcers
- A protective cone to stop rubbing
- Surgery, arranged when deep ulcers need it
Never use old eye drops at home: some can make ulcers worse.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma is raised pressure inside the eye. It is painful and can cause blindness within hours to days.
We provide
- Eye pressure measurement (tonometry)
- Emergency treatment to bring the pressure down
- Long-term drops and monitoring
- Checks of the other eye, which may also be at risk
- Comfort-focused options if sight can't be saved
A red, painful, cloudy eye needs seeing the same day.

Cataracts
Cataracts make the lens cloudy and can lead to blindness. They can be inherited or linked to diabetes or age. Not every cloudy eye is a cataract: many older pets have harmless lens ageing.
Our care includes
- A full eye exam to confirm a cataract
- Checks for diabetes and other causes
- Treatment for inflammation the cataract can cause
- Advice on surgery and whether it suits your pet
Pets adapt well when sight changes slowly, and we'll help you plan.

Dry eye
Dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) leaves the eye sore, red and covered in sticky discharge. It's common in some breeds and usually needs lifelong treatment.
We offer
- Tear production (Schirmer) test
- Drops that boost tear production
- Lubricants and treatment for infection
- Regular checks to adjust treatment
With daily drops, most pets with dry eye stay comfortable.

Eyelid & tear duct problems
Eyelids that roll in (entropion) or out (ectropion), extra lashes, cherry eye and blocked tear ducts can rub the eye or cause constant watering.
We treat
- Entropion and ectropion
- Extra or misplaced eyelashes
- Cherry eye (a prolapsed third-eyelid gland)
- Blocked tear ducts and tear staining
- Eyelid lumps
Many of these are corrected with surgery, which protects the eye long-term.

Eye tests
An eye exam is painless, and most tests take only a few minutes.
Tests we may run
- Eye pressure test
- Fluorescein stain
- Tear production test
- Examination of the retina and lens
- Blood pressure (high pressure can damage the eyes)
- Blood tests for related conditions such as diabetes
We explain what we see and what it means for your pet's sight.

Fast, accurate care is the best way to protect sight.

Had a really positive experience with Cessna Lifeline Veterinary Hospital. The doctors were extremely caring, patient, and knowledgeable. They took the time to properly explain my pet’s condition and treatment plan without rushing. The staff was polite, responsive, and handled pets with genuine compassion. The clinic is clean, well-maintained, and equipped with good facilities for consultation, diagnostics, grooming, and rehabilitation. What stood out most was the attention and comfort given to pets during treatment — you can tell the team truly loves animals. Highly recommended for anyone looking for trustworthy veterinary care in Bangalore.

We rushed our 10 yr old male GSD with bloat to Cessna on the night of April 29th as this was the only vet hospital open 24/7 for emergencies in Bangalore. The vets and staff immediately conducted all the necessary tests to determine that it was GDV and performed Gastropexy surgery at 1 am after explaining all possible outcomes for our pet. Professional and polite vet staff. The place has everything for a pet in distress and I highly recommend this place. We were also allowed to see our pet pre and post surgery for a few minutes and that was reassuring. We got regular video and picture updates about our pet's recovery, consultation from Dr Padam the next day via a phone call about our pet's vitals and discharge was also smooth with guidance on post operative care by the on duty Vet. Thank you for saving the life of our pet. We can never forget this.

Questions
Ophthalmology: questions pet parents ask
Something else on your mind? Call us on +91 76763 65365 or ask at your next visit.
Is a cloudy eye always a cataract?
No. Many older pets develop a bluish haze from normal lens ageing that doesn't affect sight much. Cloudiness can also come from ulcers, glaucoma or inflammation, which need treatment, so a proper eye exam is important.
Is an eye problem an emergency?
Often, yes. A painful, red or cloudy eye, a sudden change in sight, or an eye injury should be seen the same day, because conditions like glaucoma and deep ulcers can damage sight quickly.
Can I use human eye drops for my pet?
Please don't, unless your vet advises it. Some drops, especially those containing steroids, can make ulcers much worse.
Can pets live well if they lose their sight?
Yes. Most pets adapt well, especially when sight is lost gradually, and rely on smell and hearing. We'll help with practical changes at home and keep the eyes comfortable.
